J.W. Waterhouse

I've been studying Waterhouse's work since 1968. Most are familiar with his paintings but the paintings are all based on exceptional draughtsmanship. One may have a "song to sing" but without the skills to sing it it remains a mere shadow of what it could be. Here are some drawings by Mr. Waterhouse. Also is a shot of some of my initial drawings (cartoons they are called) that were transformed into oil paintings. Cheers, tg

Thank you for visiting my blog Painter...I really like the title of yours 'between dreams and daylight'. how lovely.
I like the sketches by Waterhouse, especially the one in the middle, she has lovely features.
I believe he did many sketches of the models he used in his paintings.
Your 'cartoon drawings' as you call them look very interesting as well, are these sketches for your your finished paintings or are you interested in animé? ♡

Hi dianne,
Thank you for you kind and insightful comments.

Cartoons are full sized drawings done on tracing paper. I then transfer the drawing to canvas where I redraw the image in charcoal including backgrounds etc. This is fixed and serves as the base to begin the painting process which involves many, many layers of transparent glazes contrasted against opaque paint.

P.S dancing in the rain is listening to your heart.
